ATDI, the French leader in radio communication networks management and planning software, is offering free download of its Hertz Mapper Web software on the company's Internet site. This software is used in the preliminary phase of network planning to carry out visibility calculations directly. This step produces an elementary terrain study. It is very easy to carry out and requires only a small outlay. It is, however, vital insofar as it forms the basis for any advanced survey of antenna field of view, which is subsequently used to optimize the network.

Publishers of cartographic information systems have flooded into this lucrative market, highlighting the functionality offered in the area of cartographic data processing. They offer products retailing for several thousand of francs, whereas ATDI provides the possibility of carrying out visibility calculations for free and immediately, by making HerTZ Mapper Web available free of charge on the company's web site.

Derived from the HerTZ Mapper application, the HerTZ Mapper Web reading and analysis software carries out fundamental calculations using digital terrain models (also available for free download from the same site). This means it can undertake terrain profile extraction, calculate the visibility from a given point and the intervisibility between different points, carry out a search for transmission sites and, finally, contribute towards equipment configuration.

The ATDI solution benefits from the company's recognized expertise acquired in the field of microwave network planning and is especially adapted to the needs of telecommunications operators. In addition to its numerous features, HerTZ Mapper Web also integrates parameters that are essential to operators and which are not taken into account by cartographic information systems. For example, HerTZ Mapper Web does not just handle the pure visibility aspect, it also takes into account the electromagnetic wave propagation modes which impact on network coverage.

All the results can be printed out directly or exported in standard format, allowing any operator to view the coverage area of a network, regardless of where it is in the world.
