ATDI Spectrum Management Software Architecture

General description
Our solution uses a standard and open architecture (SOA) with high concern over security.

From the outside world (Internet) the regulator’s customers can access services through the ICS online application. The functionalities available are, among others: input application notices, consult and fix validation errors, consult status of previous applications, consult previously accepted data…
ICS online has its own database (application forms, validation results…) and has been divided into a Web server and an application server.
This yields two advantages:
1. A better security since a firewall can separate the two components and improve security on the database;
2. More flexibility in allowing some integration of ICS Online functionalities into other Web servers.

The ICS online application can also handle service requests from other EIS applications, through an SOA adapter (XML based).

The Enterprise information system (EIS) world consists in various applications:
* ICS manager for handling assigned frequencies and other spectrum management data;
* ICS telecom for handling technical analysis;
* Other pre-existing regulator applications (finance system, case management system, customer management system…) some of whom can be thick clients while others can be based on an intranet server and light clients.

Cooperation between EIS Applications as well as the ICS Online application is done through the SOA open architecture (Web services). To improve security, an XML firewall can filter service requests coming from the outer world (allowing only queries from the ICS Online application server).

ICS telecom is a Windows (x86/x64) application optimized for technical analysis computations; it can run both:
* As a standalone application on a personal computer;
* Together with an adapter to service SOAP requests.

ICS telecom includes Add-on technology based on an Application Programming Interface (API).
An Add-on (a Add-on DLL) can customize and add new functionalities to the ICS telecom application: add functions, new reports, communication with other applications, workflow facilities, and of course add new web services callable by other applications.
The API for developing plug-ins is public so the regulators can design their own add-ons.

ICS manager is a .NET application; its database can be SQL Server or Oracle; it can run in two distinct environments:
* In the ‘back office’ configuration, it runs as a standalone application on a Windows personal computer (2 tiers). So it needs access to the database server over a LAN. It needs also access to a file server (common storage for cartography resources). This configuration also has a tight coupling with ICS telecom.
* Together with an adapter to service SOAP requests.

ICS manager can be customized through a plug-in technology. A plug-in (a .NET DLL) can customize and add new functionalities to the ICS manager application : add new menus, new data views, communication with other applications, workflow facilities, and of course add new web services callable by other applications.
The API for developing plug-ins is public so the regulators can design their own plug-ins.

The diagram below summarizes the architecture:

* Propagation models
* Frequency assignment functions
* WNS server access
* Process control
* Work flow
* Billing
* Custom reports

Compatibility analysis between fixed, mobile and radar communication systems and windfarms.

ICS telecom and HTZ warfare are now featuring a full module dedicated to the analyses of potential disturbances that might be issued by wind turbines on surrounding systems of telecommunication. These analyses can be performed at various levels :

• Estimation of the received signal and interference levels due to reflection on a wind turbine or a wind farm on Fixed (Microwave links), Mobile or Radar systems.

• Analyses of geometrical and radio constraints to respect by a wind turbine facing various types of radars : High and Medium Altitude, Low Altitude, Landing...

The calculations are made in agreements with the current ITU recommendations and European decrees and take into account not only the communication system to be protected but also the geometry of the wind turbines (height of the Mast, length of the Blades, RCS, ...). The results can be made of maps and tables...

Do not hesitate to contact us (support@atdi.com) for any additional information.

Human Exposure and FCC-OET-B65 MPE Compliance Calculations

ATDI releases a new white paper that follows the article originally written by ATDI – Sami Nedhif in May 2008 introducing ICS telecom’s capabilities for calculating Health safety and Field Strength Exposure. This paper is in response to the high volume of enquiries that the original article generated requesting clarification on the compliance calculations referenced by the FCC Guidelines described in the OET Bulletin 65. This article describes the methodology used in ATDI software tools to quickly prepare a rooftop CAD project, and an MPE analysis.

A proper MPE analysis requires all the standard components of a fully featured RF Planning tool like ICS telecom plus dedicated functionalities and user customizing capabilities. The ATDI suite of tools streamlines the process and imports the information provided from a CAD drawing in a user-friendly manner easy to replicate repeatedly. No training is required.

Read the white paper to learn more about Human Exposure And FCC-OET-B65 MPE compliance calculations.

Mobile LTE network design with ICS telecom

Currently, UMTS networks worldwide are being upgraded to High Speed Downlink Packet Access (HSDPA) in order to increase data rate and capacity for downlink packet data. In the next step, High Speed Uplink Packet Access (HSUPA) will boost uplink performance in UMTS networks.
However, in order to ensure the competitiveness of UMTS for the next 10 years and beyond, concepts for UMTS Long Term Evolution (LTE) have been investigated. The objective is a high-data-rate, low-latency and packet optimized radio access technology. This white paper describes the main features of the LTE concept and how these features can easily be handled by ICS telecom. Today, the ICS telecom software is able to provide a full solution for the LTE network design as well as for the coverage simulations, interference and traffic analysis and regarding the MBMS (Multimedia Broadcast Multicast Services) network management.

ATDI leads hands-on workshop for Asian broadcasters and regulators.
Under the auspices of the Asian Broadcasting Union and the ITU, ATDI and Broadcast Australia jointly conducted the ‘UHF-VHF BAND PLANNING FOR DIGITAL TV BROADCASTING SERVICES’ workshop in Kuala Lumpur, from July 21-24 2008. Participants hailed from Bangladesh, Bhutan, Indonesia, India, Laos, Malaysia, Nepal, Papua New Guinea, Pakistan, UAE, Singapore, Sri Lanka, and Vietnam, with an even mix of regulators and broadcasters.

This workshop provided both theoretical and hands-on sessions, with a vast contribution of real-world experience brought in by both ATDI and Broadcast Australia, as well as the numerous broadcasters and regulators who attended the workshop. ICS telecom, ATDI’s flagship radio planning tool, was used extensively during the hands-on sessions and generated enormous interest and praise from the participants.

The level of participation to this workshop, and the extent and intensity of discussions, reflects the growing importance of DTTV in the region, and underlines ATDI’s commitment to providing state of the art software solutions and services to the broadcast and regulatory community.

Long Term Evolution (LTE) with ICS telecom!

The rising E-UTRA technologies such as LTE are easily handled by ICS telecom. This sophisticated planning tool is uniquely designed to cope with the specific characteristics of LTE such as :
- wide frequency band (from 700MHz to 2.6GHz);
- large choice of possible bandwidths (from 1.4MHz to 20MHz);
- FDD or TDD modes;
- MIMO antennas;
- ...
ICS telecom includes features dedicated to the spectrum management of an LTE network with specific scheme like DL OFDMA and UL SC-FDMA. It also handles handover analysis with existing technologies (WiMAX, 3G, ...), advanced site selection (reuse or add new), thereby greatly facilitating the radio planning process for operators who are implementing LTE technology gradually. Of course, the band sharing analysis and optimization :
- between operators,
- between different technologies (WiMAX, CDMA, ...),
- between neighboring countries,
are only a few clicks away...

ICS telecom can also help to compare the pros and cons of different technologies, as well as to select or validate equipment performance.

Thanks to its built-in versatility and flexibility, ICS telecom is the long-term radio planning tool of choice for evolving technologies and planning needs.

ICS telecom can easily manage Over Subscription Ratio (OSR) as a criterion for the design of a network.
The OSR is the ratio of the total subscriber’s demand over the reference capacity of the base station when taking into account the adaptive modulation. The reference capacity of the base station corresponds to the available bit rate of the lowest modulation.….Read the white paper

Health & Safety: Field Strength Exposure in ICS telecom.
The rapid development of cellular communication systems all over the world has caused the appearance of many thousands of mobile telephone base stations. Installation of base station antennas has produced concerns about health and in some cases has resulted in litigation in court.
Independent research and measurements on electromagnetic fields in areas close to base stations was discussed, as well as a comparison of the level of exposure of local populations and current exposure limits.

This white paper addresses the problem of potential health risks of radiofrequency electromagnetic fields emitted by cellular networks (GSM, UMTS, WiMAX, Wifi…) in outdoor and indoor environments. This document is intended for radio-planner, technical director, project manager, authorities, expert responsible for population electromagnetic radiation safety, national regulators, scientists, government officials and industry representatives….Read the white paper

General considerations in WiMAX technologies
WiMAX™ is based upon the IEEE 802.16 standard enabling the delivery of wireless broadband services anytime, anywhere. WiMAX products can accommodate fixed and mobile usage models. The IEEE 802.16 standard was developed to deliver non-line-of-sight (LoS) connectivity between a subscriber station and base station with typical cell radius of three to ten kilometers. All base stations and subscriber stations claiming to be WiMAX compliant must go through a rigorous WiMAX Forum Certified™ testing process. WiMAX Forum Certified systems can be expected to deliver capacity of up to 40 Mbps per channel. This is enough bandwidth to simultaneously support hundreds of businesses with T-1 speed connectivity and thousands of residences with DSL speed connectivity. The WiMAX Forum expects mobile network deployments to provide up to 15 Mbps of capacity within a typical cell radius of up to three kilometers. WiMAX technology already has been incorporated in notebook computers and PDAs to deliver high speed mobile Internet services anytime, anywhere.
